Farm Vlog - No Rain, Just Smoke, But the Animals Keep Growing!

Welcome back to Andersen Acres! In this week’s farm vlog, we’re talking about the dry weather and how much we’re wishing for rain. With wildfires raging in our province and the one next door, we could really use a good soaking. Even through the smoke and heat, life on the homestead keeps moving forward!

We’ve got baby chicks hatching in the incubator, kittens getting bigger and more adventurous, and three of our young ducks graduated from the brooder to the outdoor pen. It’s a full week of hobby farm animal updates!

Farm Vlog - Wildfire Prep With Livestock, Newborn Puppies, and Hatching Chicks

In this week’s Andersen Acres farm vlog, we’re facing the return of wildfires in our region. While we’re not currently under evacuation orders, many local farms are—and it’s a harsh reminder of just how important it is to be prepared. We’re sharing how we approach emergency planning when you have large farm animals, livestock guardian dogs, poultry, and more to think about.

You’ll also get a heartwarming update on Tequila’s brand-new puppies—just one day old and thriving under her watchful eye. Plus, our incubator is buzzing with life as the first baby chicks start to hatch! Gwen the cat has also made a bold move, relocating her kitten from the shed back under the deck (because cats, of course).

If you love animals, are interested in homesteading, raising livestock, or just enjoy watching the ups and downs of life on a small hobby farm, this vlog is for you.

Mucoid Enteritis in Rabbit Kits Is Dangerous and Often Fatal

Mucoid enteritis is one of the most dangerous and heartbreaking conditions that can affect young rabbits—especially during the vulnerable weaning stage. In this in-depth video, we’re taking a serious look at what causes mucoid enteritis, the warning signs every rabbit owner needs to know, and what you can do to help prevent this often fatal condition in your rabbit kits.

Whether you're raising meat rabbits, show rabbits, or beloved pets, this episode is packed with essential information for anyone raising animals on a hobby farm. Learn why 5 to 8-week-old kits are most at risk, what symptoms to look for (like jelly-like stools, potbellies, and sloshing sounds), and how a high-fiber diet with plenty of hay can reduce your risk.

Here at Andersen Acres, we believe in education and preparation when it comes to animal health. Don’t wait until it’s too late—understanding mucoid enteritis could save the lives of your rabbits.

Farm Vlog – Candling Chicken Eggs and Waiting on Puppies!

Welcome back to Andersen Acres! In today’s farm vlog, we enjoy a beautiful spring day under blue skies and fluffy clouds while diving into a few homestead updates. It's not a super busy day on the hobby farm, but it's full of meaning and anticipation. We talk a little about why I make these videos—mostly to preserve the memories of all the amazing animals who have shared their lives with us over the years.

We candle our developing chicken eggs to check on the growth and viability of the embryos, a key part of raising backyard chickens and incubating eggs on a small farm. And all day, we’re keeping a close eye on Tequila, our sweet dog who is almost ready to have her puppies. (Spoiler: not today!)

Whether you're into homesteading, raising animals, or just love watching everyday life on a small farm, this video brings a peaceful look at real life on the homestead.

When the Garden Takes Over—A Hobby Farm Reality Check

Every year, I tell myself the same lie: “I’m just going to plant a few things this season.” A modest garden. Some tomatoes. Maybe squash. Just the essentials.

Then seed catalogs arrive, and suddenly I’m planning for pumpkins, beans, peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, cantaloupe, herbs I won’t use, and five different types of lettuce that will all bolt before I touch them.

Welcome to the annual garden explosion—that magical time when your starter trays multiply, your ducks think the mulch is a snack bar, and you find a seedling in your boot.

This week at Andersen Acres, the chaos is in full bloom. The squash are already trying to crawl out of their raised bed, the cantaloupe have declared war on the onions, and the goats keep giving me judgmental side-eye from the pasture like, “You sure about this, human?”

But honestly? I love it. Every wild, weedy, bug-nibbled bit of it.

Because hobby farming isn’t about control. It’s about dancing with nature, even if you trip over a cucumber vine in the process.

Fiber Goats - Cashmere and the Goats It Comes From

Curious about where luxurious cashmere comes from? In this video, we explore cashmere fiber and the goats that produce it—and you might be surprised to learn that many common goat breeds can grow this soft, valuable undercoat! Join us here at Andersen Acres as we dive into what makes a goat a "cashmere goat," how cashmere fiber is measured in microns, and why it's one of the most sought-after animal fibers in the world.

We’ll cover when and how cashmere grows, the best methods for harvesting it (combing vs shearing), and which goat breeds—including Spanish, Boer, meat, and dairy goats—can produce fiber worth saving. Whether you’re raising goats for fun, milk, meat, or brush control, this episode will show you how cashmere can become a profitable secondary cash crop on your homestead.

Perfect for small farmers, homesteaders, and anyone passionate about sustainable animal care, this video breaks down everything you need to know to get started with fiber goats.

Don’t forget to comment below if you’ve tried harvesting fiber or think your goats might be secret cashmere producers!

Farm Vlog – Chaos Gardening, Homemade Bread, and LGD Puppies on the Way!

Welcome back to Andersen Acres! Today’s farm vlog is packed with homesteading goodness. The weather was just right—sunny and mild—perfect for getting our hands in the dirt. We planted pumpkins, squash, cantaloupe, and eggplant, and tried our hand at chaos gardening by mixing up a bunch of flower seeds and scattering them in the beds. Who knows what will bloom? That’s half the fun!

In the kitchen, we made fresh homemade bread and churned our own butter—because nothing beats cheese toast on warm, rustic bread paired with a simple salad. It’s all part of our homesteading lifestyle.

And the biggest news of the day? Tequila, our beloved Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dog, is about to have her puppies! She lost her mucus plug yesterday and is dripping milk today—puppy watch has officially begun.

Whether you're here for gardening tips, homemade food inspiration, or updates from life on a hobby farm, this vlog has something for everyone who loves animals, self-sufficiency, and the rhythm of rural living.

Farm Vlog - Pregnant Livestock Guardian Dog Acting Strange, Could Puppies Be Coming Soon?

Welcome back to Andersen Acres! Today’s farm vlog is full of sunshine, new life, and one very pregnant livestock guardian dog acting a little too weird. Could Tequila be going into labor soon? We’re keeping a close eye on her as her due date draws near.

In today’s video, we also check on our newly hatched chicks and ducklings, give you a peek at the playful kittens, and share the small wins (and small setbacks) of a day on the homestead. We started more seeds indoors for the garden, but let’s be honest—some days, the to-do list gets away from you. Still, life on the farm never stops!

If you're interested in hobby farming, homesteading, raising animals, or just love watching the daily adventures of a small farm, this video is for you. From poultry to puppies, there’s always something happening at Andersen Acres.

Farm Vlog – Escaping Quail, Hatching Chicks, and Spring Garden Projects

Welcome back to Andersen Acres! Today’s farm vlog is packed with all the excitement and chaos that comes with hobby farming in springtime. First up—our quail decided to make a break for it! We had a mini farm adventure chasing them down with the help of our incredible livestock guardian dogs. Thankfully, everyone is back where they belong.

Next, we spent some time in the garden, transplanting herbs into our raised planter bed. Fresh herbs are such an important part of any homestead, and we’re thrilled to get them growing in the sunshine. We also added a new batch of eggs to the incubator—fingers crossed for a successful hatch!

And speaking of hatching, we got to witness some fluffy baby chicks breaking free from their shells in the hatcher. Watching new life begin is always magical on the farm.

If you love animals, homesteading, and seeing what daily life is like on a working hobby farm, this is the video for you. Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe to follow along with all our farm adventures!

Farm Vlog - Broody Ducks, Nestbox Eye Update, and Pizza Night!

Welcome back to Andersen Acres! In today’s cozy farm vlog, we’re sharing a slice of life from our homestead—literally. It’s pizza night, and we whipped up a spicy cheese pizza while our dogs enjoyed a few slices of their favorite: pepperoni. But farm life never slows down! We took advantage of the warmer weather to start seeds for our spring garden—because no plants means no harvest, and we’re not taking that chance.

We also give an update on our sweet kitten recovering from nestbox eye—he’s doing great! Plus, our ducks are in full broody mode, and we’re keeping a close eye on them as we get ready for the next hatching season.

Whether you’re into homesteading, hobby farming, or just love seeing life with animals, this vlog is full of charming moments and real farm updates. Join us as we juggle planting, animal care, and dinner prep—all in a day’s work here at Andersen Acres.

Should Your Pregnant Livestock Guardian Dog Continue Her Job?

Should your pregnant livestock guardian dog keep working, or should she be pulled from duty? In this video from Andersen Acres, we take a deep dive into the pros and cons of allowing your expectant LGD to continue guarding livestock during pregnancy. Some farmers say a pregnant livestock guardian dog should remain on the job to maintain territory and pack bonds. Others argue that safety, stress levels, and the needs of the unborn puppies come first. But the truth isn’t black and white—it depends on your dog, your setup, and your goals.

We’ll talk about signs of stress to watch for, how to modify her workload if needed, and how to support her health while she continues to protect your animals. We’ll also explore when it’s time to separate her for whelping and recovery, and how to smoothly reintroduce her to the flock or herd after the puppies arrive.

Whether you're raising Great Pyrenees, Anatolian Shepherds, or Maremmas, this video has insights that every hobby farmer needs.

Farm Vlog - Nestbox Eye, Escaping Rabbits, and Prepping for Puppies

Welcome back to Andersen Acres! Today’s farm vlog is packed with real-life moments from our busy homesteading day. We kick things off with a quick chat about a property line dispute that’s been brewing with a neighbor—farm life isn’t always about cute animals! Then, we tend to a poor little barn kitten who’s come down with nestbox eye, a common condition in young animals that requires fast treatment.

Wildfire the barn cat and Whiskey the Goldendoodle both got a makeover as we shaved off some serious mats—spring grooming season is officially here. Of course, no day would be complete without a rabbit escape! After a little chase, all our bunnies were safely returned to their pens.

We also set up a cozy birthing space in my closet for Tequila, our Great Pyrenees, who is expecting puppies very soon. And to end the day, we made delicious homemade butter chicken rice for dinner.

Whether you're here for animal care, homestead chaos, or just a glimpse of everyday life on the farm, you’ll love this episode.

Farm Vlog - Puppies Soon, Escape Artist Rabbits, and Hatching Eggs

In today’s Andersen Acres farm vlog, it’s a whirlwind of activity! Our Great Pyrenees, Tequila, is showing signs that her puppies are coming soon—her milk has come in, which means we're just a few days away from welcoming a litter of future livestock guardian dogs. We also worked on reinforcing the rabbit pen with extra wire in the eternal battle against our mischievous escape artist bucks. Will it work? We’ll see!

On the poultry side of things, we’ve moved a new batch of hatching eggs into lockdown. Duck eggs, chicken eggs, and quail eggs are now in the hatcher, and we’re eagerly counting down the days until we hear tiny peeps. Plus, we wrapped up the day with a delicious taco dinner—because farm work builds a serious appetite.

This vlog is full of real-life hobby farm moments, from animal care to poultry hatching and everything in between. If you’re passionate about farm animals, homesteading, or just love the chaos and charm of rural life, this one’s for you!
